Aadhaar number is compulsory for taking scholarships from UGC and AICTE

Students seeking scholarships and fellowships from recognised government institutes should possess Aadhaar card number without fail.

According to reports, the human resources development (HRD) ministry said that the order covers fellowship schemes implemented by the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education.

“The use of Aadhaar as identity document for delivery of services or benefits or subsidies simplifies the government delivery processes, brings in transparency and efficiency, and enables beneficiaries to get their entitlements directly in a convenient and seamless manner and Aadhaar obviates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one’s identity,” said by Government.

According to reports:

  • All the candidates need to declare their Aadhaar numbers by June 30
  • Meanwhile, this order from the ministry does not cover Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir

Benefits of adding Aadhaar number:

  • This would help in introducing uniformity and transparency within and across the system of higher education in the country
  • Marksheets and certificates with security features would help in verification and prevent duplication

While commenting on this issue, a source in recent media report that there will be a delay in processing fellowship amount in case students are unable to provide their Aadhaar number.
